Spend more than a week to finish this book, proved that depart from Matthew Scudder, the rest works written by Lawrence Block always cannot gave me the same enjoyment, again.

"Hit List" is the second book of the series of John Keller, who is a "urban lonely guy of assassins, wistful and introspective and lethal, is as unlikely a series character as I can imagine.", according to the author. This series are talking about a top killer and some mysteries happened around/upon him, and originally belongs to one long story but divided into several individual parts. Therefore, no more justice or any bullshit like that need to be implemented this time, only confusing in life. And I guess that's part of the reason why I don't like it, I mean… the front.

It is not the fact that there are no some familiarities I can find in the character Keller. The way he thinks, lives, or the relation with this world and people, all reminds me Matthew Scudder. They both isolated from the society in some degree, the only thing could connected them to outside world is their jobs. Also, they all lived in New York, a big city where might devoured you if you are careless. Scudder lived alone because he saw too much viciousness in his ex-job as a police officer, on the contrary, Keller lived in it because he is the one who do the dirty job. I think I just not that admire the job as a Azrael who takes away innocence's life without a reason (although who could say he/she is really innocence, but that's not the case). And even it is hard to get clear, the potential implication about why I am crazy in love in reading detective story, probably I would like to see justice be uphold in the end of the murder story. Hence, I felt pain slightly every time Keller doing his job.

Keller's major habit in leisure time is collecting stamps, so you can read quite plots about he buying/mounting/thinking the stamps, and he is very faithful of his duty as a member of jury. In some sense, he gave me the feeling that he is naive and have a pure mind in everything outside him, you can feel it from those conversations between him and his agent Dot. When he tell Dot how to deal with those images in mind, he said they will fades away soon or later if you practice the mind-training more, you just felt he is a normal person who can feel pain and sad, not cold-blood that people always associated with killer. The question is, maybe the pure mind makes him perfect to doing things like that. You know, a direct mind to look through those appearance.

No matter what, I think I will borrow another book of him, if I could find in library. But I am not sure will I finishing it next time. And I found the sneak preview of "Hit List" in L. Block's official site, enjoy it!
