Anna (to her father): “Sure – like I’d been living a long, long time – out here in the fog. I don’t know how to tell you yust what I mean. It’s like I’d come home after a long visit away some place. It all seems like I’d been here before lots of times – on boats – in this same fog. You must think I’m off my base.”
自小被父親送到內陸生活的Anna,最後還是在海上找到自己的歸宿,重蹈所有Christopherson家女人的命運,嫁給一個水手,‘等待’歸人成了她生命中重要的一環。這該說是‘宿命’嗎?不管父親再怎麼阻擋,生為水手之女的Anna,終究還是回到了海上來。
老實說,‘Anna Christie’的劇本就跟它的演出一樣難讀。畢竟Eugene O’Neill想表現出下層勞動階級的粗鄙言詞,所以許多地方——尤其是老Chris的部分——充斥著簡約過和刻意錯寫的語句,像是把just發作yust、把I當成Ay、以及that變成dat等等,類似例子層出不窮。所以一開始讀的時候覺得很痛苦,因為要邊看邊猜。最後養成了把句子念出來的習慣,透過近似的發音來猜測正確的意涵。也因為這樣,之前看了前面一點就放棄、選擇去讀Michael Frayn的‘Noise Off’。後來讀完了、想不到有啥可讀時,才又去把它找了出來。看完了劇本,覺得在Donmar Warehouse上演的版本與之相去不遠,主要角色的詮釋也相當完整與感情澎湃。
自小被長期出海的父親遺棄在親戚家的Anna,帶著養病的心情來投靠久未謀面的父親Chris。原本以為父親早已脫離了航海一行、找了個在陸上的守門人工作,但見了面Anna才發現父親隱瞞了自己又重回海上、成為一個拖船船長的事實。本來遲疑著是否要離開的Anna,在父親的苦苦勸求下,便一同登船休養生息。在酒吧重逢的場景裡,有一個相當令人玩味的橋段是當老Chris詢問Anna要喝什麼時,早先已經灌下幾杯whisky的Anna突然羞澀似地裝作不知道酒吧裡有什麼可喝。或許是想要給自己的父親留下個自己是個端莊女孩的形像,但在這裡所呈現的Anna的個性反差,的確值得玩味,或許也是為後來的情節埋下伏筆,暗示著她隱藏的一面。
在船上生活了十天之後,Anna徹徹底底地喜歡上在海上漂盪的生活。儘管老Chris嘲笑著她對海上生活的讚嘆、警告她說她看到的只是這個ole davil sea好的一面,仍舊改變不了Anna的看法。
Anna (to her father): “Sure I do. Everything’s been so different from anything I ever come across before. And now – this fog – Gee, I wouldn’t have missed it for nothing. I never thought living on ships was so different from land. Gee, I’d yust love to work on it, honest I would, if I was a man. I don’t wonder you always been a sailor.”
原本憎恨著追尋海洋的父親的Anna,不知不覺中也被海洋的遼闊與清新給迷或住了。
Anna (to her father): “But why d’you s’pose I feel so – so – like I’d found something I’d missed and been looking for – ‘s if this was the right place for me to fit in? And I seem to have forgot – everything that’s happened – like it didn’t matter no more. And I feel clean, somehow – like you feel yust after you’ve took a bath. And I feel happy for once – yes, honest! – happier than I ever been anywhere before! It’s nutty for me to feel that way, don’t you think?”
看著如此高興的女兒,老Chris或許感受到即將到來的命運的陰影。
Chris: “Ay thank Ay’m damn fool for bring you on voyage, Anna.”
就在兩人交談的同時,遠處響起了求救的呼聲。原來有艘船的引擎失靈,而船上的船員已經在海上漂盪五天。當所有人都匆忙地趕去救人的同時,對這突如其來的景況有些手足無措的Anna,只能呆愣在船板上。也就是在這晚,她見到了落難的Mat Burke。在海上漂盪好幾天的Mat神智有些不清醒,但看到Anna仍舊不忘吹噓著自身的男子氣概。雖然對Mat不時爆出的挑釁言詞感到生氣,Anna還是對這個坦白直率的海上男兒產生了興趣。在兩人的針鋒相對下,Anna質疑著Mat對航海生活的執著時,Mat說了一段台詞深深地呼應了後來情勢的發展:
Burke: “Then you think a girl the like of yourself might maybe not mind the past at all but only be seeing the good herself put in me?”
當老Chris看到Anna與一個陌生的船員如此親密地談話時,他忍不住地出聲干預。但個性強悍的Anna自然不願受到父親的指使,反而主動提出讓Mat睡自己的床的建議。看著女兒就這麼輕易地倒向對方(真的是終究要嫁出去的啊...老Chris都要哭了),老Chris忍不住地大聲責怪那將陌生男人帶到他船上來的ole davil sea。
Chris: “Dat’s your dirty trick, damn ole davil, you! But, py God, you don’t do dat! Not while Ay’m living! No, py God, you don’t!”
但很明顯地,老Chris的祈願並未受到回應。看著女兒與Mat日漸趨近,老Chris怎麼勸說也無法阻擋女兒的固執個性。不過,當他向Anna探口風時,Anna卻對兩人是否會結婚的想法反應劇烈。
Anna (to her father): “No! If I’d meet him four years ago – or even two years ago – I’d have jumped at the chance, I tell you that straight. And I would now – only he’s such a simple guy – a big kid – and I ain’t got the heart to fool him. But don’t never say again he ain’t good enough for me. It’s me ain’t good enough for him.”
雖然對Anna的激烈反應感到詫異,但老Chris還是對女兒會留在自己身邊的想法感到安慰。所以當Mat清楚表示他會與Anna結婚時,他忍不住得意洋洋地嘲笑Mat。就在兩人間的氣氛變得劍拔弩張之際,外出的Anna正巧回到船上。Mat見機趕緊上前對Anna表明心意,而Anna也明白地表示自己對Mat抱持同樣的心情。可是Mat的雀躍之情,卻被Anna一句“Goodbye”給攪混了。率直的他無法理解會何Anna口口聲聲說愛他,但卻不願與他結為連理。
Burke (to Anna): “To the devil with all other reasons then. They don’t matter with me at all.”
雖然他如此表明心跡,但Anna仍舊拒絕他的求婚。對於這般反覆無常感到生氣的Mat態度開始變得強硬,並錯把Anna當成個猶豫不決的女人,近而以直接的口氣命令著Anna趕快換裝跟他走。個性剛強的Anna自然不會接受這種命令式的語氣,夾在父親與Mat的交相命令之下,她終於忍不住爆發:
“What a chance! You make me laugh, honest! Want to bet you will? Wait’n’ see! First thing is, I want to tell you two guys something. You was going on’s if one of you had got to own me. But nobody owns me, see? -’cepting myself. I’ll do what I please, and no man, I don’t give a hoot who he is, can tell me what to do! I ain’t asking wither of you for a living. I can make it myself – one way or other. I’m my own boss. So put that in your pipe and smoke it! You and your orders!”
不過,Anna的強悍其來有自。自小被父親丟在表親家的Anna,受盡親戚的欺凌,更有甚者,她的其中一位表兄弟對她行為輕薄。最後忍不住逃出親戚的農場的她,為了謀生而淪落為娼妓。此一不堪事實不只讓老Chris肝腸寸斷、也讓Mat痛徹心扉。但是,為了愛情而誠實的Anna,就算個性倔強也還是在愛人面前低了頭。她向開始怨恨她的Mat懇求道:
“… And you’d die laughing sure if I said that meeting you that funny way that night in the fog, and afterwards seeing that you was straight goods stuck on me, had got me to thinking for the first time, and I sized you up as a different kind of man – a sea-man as different from the ones on land as water is from mud – and that was why I got stuck with you, too. I wanted to marry you and fool you, but I couldn’t. Don’t you see how I’d changed? I couldn’t marry you with you believing a lie – and I was shamed to tell you the truth – till the both of you forced my hand, and I seen you was the same as all the rest. And now, give me a bawling out and beat it, like I can tell you’re going to. Will you believe it if I tell you that loving you has made me – clean? It’s the straight goods, honest!”
霧中相遇的兩人,現在撥開迷霧而見到彼此的真面目。Mat曾經承諾的是言如今受到嚴苛的挑戰,他對真相怒不可遏,揚言要殺了Anna好平復他被背叛的心。但看著Anna的雙眼,下不了手的他只好憤恨地離去。老Chris見狀也跟著離開。面對生命中兩個最親近的男人都承受不了尖銳的事實而離去買醉,Anna心裡自然失望不已,卻也無可奈何。
在外買醉了兩天的老Chris回到船上時,面對的是呆坐在搖椅上、仍舊等待著Mat回心轉意的Anna,以及擺在地上的行李。驚訝之餘,老Chris懇求著女兒的原諒並說自己想出辦法來補救,也就是他決定重當海員,並將搭上船前往Cape Town。對於父親這般愚蠢的補救之道,Anna除了搖頭嘆息之外,也已無力改變。這個懦弱的父親,最後仍選擇逃回海上,也不肯在這困難情境下留在唯一的女兒身邊支持她。
然而,就在老Chris回房休息之後,又有另外一人前來造訪。原來是Mat帶著滿身的酒氣與打鬥後的傷痕來找Anna。看著回頭的Mat,Anna的心情是憂喜半參,但她仍然選擇向Mat低頭,苦苦訴求著自己因為他的愛而成為了不一樣的女人。心裡仍舊無法放棄對Anna的感情的Mat,要求她向母親所留下的十字架發下重誓,Anna自然連聲答應。(而從這裡開始我覺得本劇莫名地朝搞笑路線發展…)當她發完誓後,Mat卻突如其來的問了一句:
Mat: “Is it Catholic ye are?”
Anna: “No. Why?”
Mat: “Oh, God, help me! There’s some divil’s trickery in it, to be swearing an oath on a Catholic cross and you wan of the others.”
雖然這麼搞笑了一下,但Mat還是選擇相信Anna。
Mat: “Oh, I’d a right to stay away from you – but I couldn’t! I was loving you in spite of it all, and wanting to be with you, God forgive me, no matter what you are. I’d go mad if I’d not have you! I’d be killing the world – “
最後,故事結尾在老Chris的獨白下…
“Fog, fog, fog, all bloody time. You can’t see vhere you vas going, no. Only dat ole davil, sea – she knows!”
這個劇本讀起來帶有某種程度的愁思,或許是薄霧的關係、或許是海洋帶來的飄盪的情懷。Eugene O’Neill似乎是個喜歡寫海的劇作家,因為我知道的、關於海洋的劇作就有兩齣。一個好的劇作家,必然在言詞上要反映人物的社會階級與個性,而我覺得O’Neill在這點上相當成功(至少在本劇裡)。Anna的強悍不屈、 Mat的直率、與老Chris的怯弱與護女心切,都從他們的對話裡清晰地表達出來。我喜歡Anna大聲疾呼自己是自己的主人那段,但對她最後如此卑微地請求Mat感到有些…不以為然。當然,她是該追求自己的愛情。也或許是因為我不是當事人,對她的卑躬屈膝感到…‘又是同樣地女人在愛情裡屈膝’這般景象重演;再加上最後她選擇走上跟母親同樣的道路,對於隻身等待良人歸來的命運就這麼無怨無悔地接受,再再都讓我感到…無言。嗯,但這是她的選擇,不是嗎?
